Let's face it. Jimmie Johnson is going to win his third consecutive Sprint Cup title in a couple of weeks. The question is, will he still go for the win late in a race? This weekend at Phoenix International Raceway, I think he will.
Johnson has won the last two races at PIR and I think he'll try to get it locked up Sunday so that next weekend's race at Homestead is just a lazy Sunday drive in the Florida sun.
Johnson could have backed off at Atlanta, but instead he made up something like nine positions in the closing laps to finish a stunning second. Something tells me there won't be any letting up if the 48 is in position to win on Sunday.
Then again, if something happens to the leading Chevy, Carl Edwards will make up even more ground if he can put together a strong run, and we might in fact see a real race in the last event of the Chase. How cool would that be?
Plenty of racing left, but the smart money is on Johnson this weekend. Here's my power rankings:
Jason Randall’s weekly Sprint Cup power rankings:
1. Jimmie Johnson (1). He's won the last two races at Phoenix and I think it'll be three in a row on Sunday.
2. Carl Edwards (2). How 'bout that Ford fuel mileage last weekend at Texas Motor Speedway?
3. Greg Biffle (3). Might not win this weekend, but he'll be a force again at Homestead.
4. Jeff Gordon (-). It's strange to see the 24 without a win this deep in a season, but Gordon's been running well of late.
5. Jeff Burton (5). The 31 car certainly has a shot at a pair of strong finishes over the next two weekends.
