Illini Lay An Egg in "The Barn"

It doesnt happen very often...which is why it was so noteworthy.  The Illini got blown out in the 2nd half of their game with Minnesota and suffered just their 4th loss of this surprising season.  The previous three losses were games decided in the last couple of minutes.  Not so this time.

A combination of factors led to the loss:

Solid Minnesota defense.  In fact it was the first time this season I saw the Illini offense get smothered everytime they wanted to move the ball and you can probably count on two hands the number of times the Illini got clean looks at the basket. The few times they did get an open look it just wouldnt go into the basket. Plus they didnt screen very well.

Minnesota was due to win against the Illini sometime.  It had been nearly a decade since a Minnesota team had defeated an Illinois team.  Twenty straight wins against 1 team in a major conference is very unusual.

The Illini are missing some strength inside.  The Illini need to move the ball to get open shots and since they are the best shooting team in the Big Ten those good shots usually go in the basket.  When they make those shots they dont need as many rebounds to win.  If they can't get their shot and force up tough shots and can't get the rebound...then you have what happend on Thursday night in Minneapolis.

The good news is that the Illini have a quick turnaround with a game Sunday against Iowa...which started the year 9-2 but has lost 5 of 6 in recent Big Ten play.    It will be a chance for the Illini to get back on track.

By the way....Quick Change will be the halftime entertainment at the Iowa game.  Make sure you stay in your seat long enough to see them.  They are worth it.
