The interim chair of the Champaign County Democratic Party, Al Klein, said today that he'll run to fill the incomplete term of Tony Fabri, who stepped down last month.
Klein thus becomes at least the third candidate for the position, which runs through next spring. The other candidates are Kevin Sandefur of Royal and Michael Richards of Champaign.
The election -- by Democratic precinct committeemen -- will be next Wednesday at the regularly scheduled meeting of the party's central committee. Klein said it's possible the election process could take two meetings.
Klein plans to run with Urbana Mayor Laurel Prussing as a team, with Klein as chairman and Prussing as the new first vice chair, replacing him.
"We're running as a center, unifying influence in the party," he said. "I will not talk out against any other Democrat."
