Columnists returning to the paper

Welcome to the Editor's Desk, which I hope to use to keep you informed about what's going on at The News-Gazette. We'll discuss issues great and small, whatever is of concern to our readers. Here's a good place to start – Mr. Handyperson and Carolyn Hax will be returning to the paper. Judging from the number of phone calls, letters and e-mails we received, this should be good news to a lot of readers. We're sorry you missed them for the last several weeks.
Mr. Handyperson's home repair advice column will once again appear Saturdays in our At Home pages starting March 8. We still have to find a home for Carolyn Hax. Her advice column used to be on our E3 section on Thursdays, but we're looking for a home for her in the daily paper since she now writes seven days a week.
Why did we remove them in the first place? Logical question. We review all of our syndicated columnists at the end of each year and generally get rid of some we think have run their course. There's no sure-fire way to know which features people like or don't like, so we make changes based more on intuition than anything else. We usually don't get much reaction, but we obviously miscalculated this time, as we did with Bob Swisher's column on collectibles. If our readers like them, we're glad to bring them back.

Those fun to read columns are fine, but I wish you would reinstate Katie Clements. If we ever needed a watchful eye in Springfield, it's with this administration.

I wanted to write an angry letter to protest those but couldn't because of various rules I must follow. So, great, I love those two columns. Now, I hope you'll use your considerable influence to see that we get White Sox coverage this season, fair and balanced with respect to Cubs and Cardinals coverage.
