The high price of driving

I returned recently from a trip by car to New Hampshire. I had expected that gasoline in Illinois would be about the most expensive I would see on the trip because of state taxes. I was surprised to find this was not the case.I drove from C-U, where gas was about $3.959 a gallon and where we often complain that it's more expensive than in other nearby cities, to Chicago, where it is truly expensive. The night I was there, gas prices ran from $4.359 on up, depending on the grade.
On the return trip, the cheapest price I saw was $3.899 in eastern Ohio. Prices ran from $3.949 to $4.159 in New Hampshire, $4.219 and higher on the New York Thruway, over $4 in Pennsylvania and western Ohio, and $4.109 and up in Indiana. When I got back to Champaign last Sunday afternoon, prices ran from $3.929 to $3.949.
Take into account that I traveled mostly along interstate highways, where prices are expected to be a little higher, but still, gasoline in Illinois was on the low end of what I saw except for the Chicago area.

Meaningless. The cost of living and wages and salaries in the Northeast are always higher.
Indiana is trying to make up for years of low motor fuel taxes.

Gas is even cheaper today ... I saw prices like 3.87 on Lincoln and Green this afternoon. Last week, I filled up at Springfield/Mattis for 3.76.

It is very amusing to me that a "news" editor would be concerned about high gas prices. After all, you've spent decades cheerleading for more environmental regulations and, in recent years, propagating the myth of "global warming." On top of that, you support the subordination of Amerikan economic interests in the Middle East to the tiny but very powerful nation of Israel, which has further destabilized global oil markets.
Now gas prices are high, and most "news" media types blame it on those "greedy oil companies."
The good news is an increasing number of Americans no longer trust the mainstream "news" media. The even better news is that the newspaper industry is going broke! :)

It seems that single people living on a single income will soon be unable to maintain an indepent living at all.

Gentile:
Wrong rant. The N-G loves its corporate allies. If there were oil companies around here, the paper would say nothing about high gas prices.
It's not much for regulations, either. The planned development north of the city where Christie was headed never made much sense, but we never heard that side of the discussion. If there's any cheerleading, it's for more development on the fringes, more ignoring of the areas that are already developed, and especially for the continuing rise of Big Medicine, which can do no wrong in the N-G's eyes.
