Another night game on ABC/ESPN

I'll admit that I had a not-so-good feeling going into this game.  I figured that the Illini were ready, that they would bring their "A" game, that emotion and intensity wouldn't be a problem.  It's just those darn night games, the ones tabbed as a big one to watch.  I didn't do the research, but my memory says that we haven't won one of those in quite awhile.  So, my expectations were already knocked down a notch.

The atmosphere was unreal.  That white-out was awesome.  How do you hear on the field with that many people yelling, singing, etc?  Has to be tough.

But, my attitude changed with the Illini's first drive.  Yes, I scared my daughter when I yelled after the Illini scored first.  I continued that positive attitude for a portion of the first half.  At least we were a happy bunch at my house until almost half time.  But, our moods changed.

I wondered what happened to the offense.  Flashes of greatness were mixed in between long periods of trying to set up the big one.  Of course, Benn had a great game, as did Dufrene.  LeShoure and Ford were encouraging signs, too.

Then there was the quarterback sneak on 4th and 2.  I'll not say anymore on that...

Just when my 10-yr. old son was complaining about the number of pitches that Juice was doing and the draws here and there, it was the perfect set-up for Benn's 54-yard pass reception for the touchdown.  But it wasn't enough.

It wasn't enough because Penn State's offense nearly did whatever they wanted to our defense.  No, I'm not happy that the Illini defense played the way they did.   It's pretty obvious that they have got to improve on tackling and coverage or this will be a long season.

Around the Big Ten, I must say that no tears were shed in this house after Iowa got beat at home.  With the in-laws visiting us over the weekend from Geneseo (by the Quad Cities), they think (as do I) that any day Iowa loses is a good day!

Remember, too, that I am never happy when Michigan wins.  However, I don't think that this was necessarily a bad thing, coming from behind against Wisconsin for the win.  I think they are going to be extra-confident and full of themselves (oh wait-is that different than any other day?).  Maybe it's time for the Illini to give them a reality check.

The Illini will have to fix their defensive errors, not allow a kickoff return, and figure out how to get the ball to Benn a few more times to make a win next week a possibility.  I'm thinking those things will be much improved next Saturday.  At least it's not a night game...
