The first of two major polls was released today (can you really count the Harris Poll?). And Illinois got votes from coaches other than Ron Zook.
Even if Zook voted the Illini second, it would have taken another 14 points to reach the Illinois total of 38. More likely, about a dozen or so coaches put the Illini toward the bottom of their Top 25s.
You get 25 points for first, 24 for second, etc. It doesn't take a lot of No. 23s or 24s to get to 38 points.
Florida was close to a unanimous choice for No. 1, getting all but six of the 59 first-place votes. A perfect score is 1,475 and the Gators finished nine points short. What that means is that at least one voter had the Gators lower than second.
When the AP Top 25 is released later in the month, expect a similar result. Florida will get most of the first-place votes and Illinois will be among the others receiving votes.
