PATTI DAVIS

I just got off the phone with Patti Davis, the daughter of President Reagan and Nancy Reagan...and we had the most interesting conversation on her book THE LIVES OUR MOTHERS LEAVE US and also her unique relationship with her father and mother. I have to admit that very few guests have ever intimidated me. I have met some of the biggest stars in the world at my time at The Assembly Hall and only got 'butterflies' a couple of times (Elton John, Frank Sinatra, Mikhail Baryshnikov), so I am not easily rattled. However, going into the conversation with Miss Davis, I was feeling a little nervous since she has had such a reputation for being outspoken. Obviously the reason we were talking was to discuss her book, but I would not be doing my job if we did not talk about her past relationship with her parents and the ultimate reconciliation. As it turns out after about 5 minutes into our conversation, any intimidation I may have felt was gone. She was a genuinely nice person who was open to discussing her outspoken past, especially when it related to her book which includes 23 stories of prominent women sharing their relationships with their mothers. We discussed what it was like being the daughter of the most powerful man in the world, how 'The Great Communicator" did not communicate so well at home, why she changed her last name, and how her father's illness brought her closer to both her parents, particularly her mother. They now speak on the phone each day and have a special bond. What a story and the stories told in her book by the 23 women profiled are funny, heartwrenching and very moving. It made me want to call my mom right away. Patti Davis will be my featured guest of the day on Monday, June 22 during the 3:00 hour. I think you will find her story and the stories of the women she profiles to be very inspiring.
