It's the time of year where there is so much happening on the prep sports scene that it would be impossible for us to cover everything. But while we've placed so much focus on football the past eight weeks, it's about time some other sports got some extensive coverage. So instead of covering a football game Friday night, I'll be in the Bloomington-Normal area covering the boys' state golf tournament. Seventeen golfers from the News-Gazette area will be taking part in the finals, with a realistic possibility of a state champion emerging.
- The St. Thomas More team is expected to be in the hunt for a state championship. The Sabers finished sixth at last year's event.
- Centennial senior Joe Smith is playing in the top qualifying group on Friday morning and he has the best shot of any area player at winning a title. Smith has finished in the top-10 in each of his first three seasons. If he is to come out on top, he will have to defeat Massac County's Mason Jacobs. Jacobs has won the title in each of the last two years and will play his college golf for Mike Small's Illini squad.
- Another player to watch out for is Arcola's Mark Klinger. Klinger will tee off at about 9:15 on Friday morning, then drive back to Arcola after his round to get ready to play a football game Friday night. Klinger is the Purple Riders' starting quarterback and will be playing in his third football game in eight days. He'll be back in Bloomington on Saturday to complete his final round.
- The girls' state finals are being held this weekend in Cardondale and the area will be well-represented there, too.
- St. Thomas More's girls team will be going for a state title. The Sabers finished third last year and Pat Hettermann's squad is led by Katie Jean and Sheila Skulborstad, who each placed in the top 15 at last year's finals.
- Seven other area girls will be competing as individuals: Allison Riggs and Amy Elliott of Blue Ridge; Amy Keigher of Iroquois West; Sidney Overman of GCMS; and Kaylee Maiden of Clinton will be competing in the Class 1A field. Centennial's Jenna and Lizzy Dombroski will be playing in the Class 2A field. Jenna Dombroski, the Champaign-Urbana Twin City Open champion, finished 23rd last year as a sophomore.

It'll be interesting to see how the NG gives out the player of the year award. The Smith kid from CHS should win for the boys. If for no other reason, he has been consistent all four years and finished best amoung the area boys in state. The gal from St Thomas Moore should walk for the girls. She won everything under the sun and finished top four in state. If these 2 don't win, there should be an investigation. Can someone say, " No brainer!"
