Each week, staff writer Marcus Jackson will pose five questions to an area prep athlete. This week it’s St. Joseph-Ogden senior lineman Eli Marlow.
MJ: At our photo shoot last month you rolled up in a pretty sweet ride. What kind of car was that?
EM: It’s a 1968 Nova that me and my dad worked on, it’s mine. I’ve just been around cars all my life and just kind of stuck with it I guess.
MJ: If you could have any car from the past or present, what would you pick?
EM: I’d probably go with a 1970 Chevelle. Just the body on it. It’s so clean and so slick.
MJ: Do you ever let your friends drive your car?
EM: No, oh no. That’s for me and the pops.
MJ: Do your friends ever hassle you and try to talk you into driving it?
EM: Some of them do and they’ll joke and say, ‘I’m going to steal your car,” but I guess that’s what you get for having a nice car.
MJ: So they can joke with you all they want, but they just better never mess with it, right?
EM: Right. I’ll give them a ride if they want, but that’s about it.
MJ: What was it like losing a regular season game for the first time since 2005?
EM: It was tough for a lot of the guys because obviously we’re not used to that. But we just don’t have the team we had the past couple years. We’ve got guys that can do their job and we put up a heck of a fight and we were in the game until the end when they put that last one on us.
MJ: Are you worried about the team’s confidence at all going forward?
EM: Oh no, Stillman (Valley) was definitely a game to build confidence on. We did a lot of things right and we can just build off of that and it’ll just build us up going into our conference games.
MJ: How were the guys feeling at practice on Monday?
EM: Some of the guys were pretty sore but they were ready to get back after it because we know conference is going to be tough.
MJ: How did coach (Dick) Duval react after the loss?
EM: He told us we did a lot of things right, we have some things that we lacked in a some places to get better, but that’s what practice is for and that’s what we’re going to do this week.
MJ: Have you been watching former teammate Zach Becker playing for Illinois?
EM: It’s awesome. Me and a bunch of guys watched the game at my house and every time we saw him, we were yelling, ‘There’s Becker, that’s him.’ It’s awesome to see a guy we played with playing on that level. I was wanting him to get that touchdown so bad.
