Each week staff writer Marcus Jackson poses five questions to an area prep athlete. This week it's Mahomet-Seymour linebacker/fullback Bob Schroeder.

MJ: What was the experience of being a standard bearer at the U.S. Open like for you?
BS: That was a really cool experience. I was basically the sign holder for Tiger Woods. I got Tiger’s golf ball and I was really lucky and it was just a fortunate experience for me. I was completely blessed that day. I got his golf ball that he got second place with that day.

MJ: Were you in awe of him when you got to meet him?
BS: Not really. I got to talk to his caddy, Steve (Williams) a little bit. He’s the one who gave me the ball. It’s actually pretty funny, I got to sign a few autographs for kids, they asked for my autograph. I was like, ‘Oh sure, but I don’t know why you want an autograph from me’ but it was all good.

MJ: Where’s the golf ball now?
BS: It’s actually in my room, a few feet away from me. I thought about putting it on eBay, but that probably wouldn’t be a good idea.

MJ: On the baseball field you sprint at full speed to and from your position in left field, what’s the story behind that?
BS: It’s just one of those things where if people are looking to see what kind of person I am that shows. I don’t like how people jog or walk out to their position. If you love a sport, you might as well give everything you have 100 percent of the time and when I step on the field I want to show people how committed I am and how much I love the sport. I want to give 110 percent and just set a good example.

MJ: You played baseball with a broken wrist this summer?
BS: Yeah that was so stupid, I played 10 weeks with a broken hand and didn’t even know it was broken. The doctor was kind of like, ‘You do realize you hand’s been broken for 10 weeks, right?’ And I was like, ‘No.’ It really didn’t cross my mind. I just thought it hurt a little bit.

MJ: So you have a pretty high tolerance for pain?
BS: Yeah. At the (Bloomington Central Catholic) game, I slightly sprained my ankle and I played with that last week against Eureka. It’s been getting a lot better.

MJ:What’s it like blocking for a great back like Andrew Brewer?
BS: I’m just blessed that he can do a lot behind me. Sometimes I look behind me and he’s not there because he’s already down field. It’s just an honor to do all I can for my team. I’m just blessed by God to have such a good athlete behind me.

MJ: What would it mean to bring a state title back to Mahomet-Seymour?
It would mean the world. It would be a great experience for our community and great for our senior class to bring something back to the school that’s done so much for us.
