Spring Cleaning Made Cleaner

Easter came early this year and with it spring cleaning. The weather is warmer and like clockwork I've once again got the unmistakable urge to clean. Of course, I'm dealing with the raging hormones and nesting instincts that go along with pregnancy but the urge will not be denied.

As a kid I never understood why my mother suddenly became so obsessed with cleaning this time of year. I always asked, "Why not just do it a little at a time? Why go nuts for a few weeks and wear yourself out?" I just didn't get it. Spring cleaning isn't just about a marathon run to complete a long list of chores we've been avoiding all year. Spring cleaning is a chance to start over and re-imagine what you want your house and your life to be.

This year is a first for me. Instead of going out to get the long list of cleaning supplies I usually buy I'm going low tech this year. Armed with a non-toxic all purpose cleaner, vinegar, baking soda, non-toxic glass cleaner, lemon juice, salt, and a little elbow grease I'm looking forward a cleaner, safer, and less smelly sort of spring cleaning.

As a mother with a toddler that gets into everything, a pregnant woman that needs to avoid chemicals, and someone with asthma I've learned to appreciate the difference a simpler cleaning arsenal can make. As a frugal mom I also appreciate how budget friendly it is and as someone who cares about the environment I've got a lot less guilt. I'm not guilt free. I've still got the bleach in the laundry room I haven't been able to give up yet but give me time.

So here I go off to start my cleaning. Spray bottles in hand and a toddler two steps behind me. She is a welcome addition to the cleaning crew. I won't have to worry about her inhaling dangerous fumes or having to call poison control. It is peace of mind I truly treasure. As I head off toward a greener spring cleaning I hope I'm not the only one.
