Done in by your wants, not your needs?

New York Times columnist David Brooks has an excellent column about something we could all do, relatively easily, that would dramatically improve our lives and not require anything of the government.
Doesn't that sound great?

Brooks is writing about personal irresponsibility, particularly with respect to money, and how it has changed people's lives and greatly damaged our society.
It's worth reading, and the advice it offers is worth following.

It's always entertaining to receive financial advice from the Baby Boomer generation.

Work hard, Generation X. After all, your benefits are worse, and you have to subsidize millions of older Americans.

So cut that spending; many retired people are relying on you to work hard so they can live well.

I think the looming Social Security crisis is just one reason younger generations should look at our finances more carefully, rather than ignoring them and hoping the problem goes away.

Gen Xers and Millennials need to learn the importance of stashing money in our IRAs and 401(k)s, because we're not going to have a Social Security cushion when we're older. Other than voting, there's not much I can do about Social Security but I can make sure I'm not relying on it for my own retirement.

This article hits on so many crucial points, especially for young people who don't have much experience with money. I think young people should learn from the Baby Boomers' mistakes (and successes).

The problem is, in my opinion, making this message sexy enough that people will listen and change their habits.

There's not as much money to stash, though, because of bad government policies.

The biggest problem is the health care mess. The N-G likes to print quotes from hospital managers saying it's the patients' fault, but it's not.

We need health care reform ASAP. Right now, the politicians aren't even looking at the problem.
