Weekend Wrap - Week 2

Every Monday during the prep football season, IlliniHQ.com will give a wrap-up of how Illini commits and targets fared during the previous weekend's games. Here are a few highlights from week two.

  • Future Illini quarterback CHANDLER WHITMER completed 18 of 27 passes for 190 yards and a touchdown in a 27-14 loss to Glenbard West on Saturday. Whitmer threw two interceptions for the second week in a row.
  • CJ FIEDOROWICZ had five receptions for 168 yards and two touchdowns to help lead Johnsburg to a 42-28 win over Jacobs on Friday night. Fiedorowicz is ranked the No. 5 tight end in the country by Rivals.com.
  • Defensive back DEXTER McDONALD, an Illini commit, and the Rockhurst (Mo.) defense were no match for Hutchinson, the five-time defending Kansas 5A state champion. Hutchinson never threw a pass but accumulated 475 yards on the ground in route to a 55-27 victory over Rockhurst (1-1) on Friday night. McDonald had three interceptions in Rockhurst's week one victory.
  • Illini commit MICHAEL HEITZ and South Fulton fell to Pittsfield, ranked No. 8 in Class 3A, 32-13 on Friday. South Fulton (0-2) gained 92 yards rushing on 25 carries. HEITZ, a 6-foot-6, 260-pound offensive tackle committed to Illinois earlier this month.
  • Illinois commit COREY COOPER caught a touchdown pass, but Proviso East fell to Hinsdale Central 37-26 on Friday. Hinsdale Central quarterback John Whitelaw, a Division I recruit, torched Cooper and the Pirates defense for two touchdown passes, including a 70-yard passing score, and 167 yards rushing.
  • Future Illinois offensive lineman ANDY GALLIK and Brother Rice defeated Chicago Amundsen 49-10 on Friday. Gallik, a 6-foot-2, 290-pound offensive lineman, committed to Illinois in June.
  • Illini commit SHAWN AFRYL, an offensive lineman, and Niles West lost to Niles North 25-15 in a cross town rivalry game on Friday. Afryl (6-foot-3, 300 pounds) committed to the Illini in April and will likely play guard in college.
  • Future Illini defender DANIEL EASTERLY and Detroit Cass Tech (1-1) lost to Detroit Crockett 16-8 on Friday. Read more about Easterly here.
  • MARK WILSON, a linebacker committed to Illinois, and Tallahassee Lincoln lost to Niceville 41-34 in their season opener.

TARGETS - How some of the Illinois recruiting targets played during the first week of the high school season.

  • Offensive tackle SEAN HICKEY and Murrysville (Pa.) Franklin Regional defeated Southmoreland 48-15 in their season opener on Friday. Hickey has plans to commit to one of three schools: Illinois, Boston College or Syracuse.
  • KONY EALY of New Madrid (Mo.) helped his team to a 38-35 win with a 46-yard touchdown reception. Ealy, a 6-foot, 230-pound senior, is being recruited as a defensive end and has offers from eight schools, including Illinois and Missouri.
  • Oak Lawn Richards wide receiver KEITH SCONIERS had a 10-yard touchdown on Friday. But Richards fell to Lockport 37-36 in overtime.
