Hayden Hoerdemann has a diverse list of college suitors. The 6-foot-3 Bloomington Central Catholic guard has scholarship offers from Eastern Illinois and Illinois State. But high-major programs, like Oklahoma, Miami (Fla.), Illinois and Wisconsin, are also recruiting the talented scorer.

Oh, and elite academic schools like Harvard and Princeton have been hot on his trail too.

"His recruitment is about as weird as it gets," said Gavin Sullivan, Hoerdemann's Peoria Irish AAU coach.

Miami (Fla.) began showing interest in Hoerdemann after an impressive summer with the Irish. Hoerdemann has heavy interest from several Missouri Valley Conference teams. Hoerdemann visited the Southern Illinois campus last month.

Hoerdemann visited several Big Ten campuses last fall, including Illinois, Iowa, Northwestern and Iowa. No high-majors have extended scholarship offers, but Sullivan thinks the talented guard could end up at a Big Ten school in the end - if things work out just right.

"I'd hate to say that he's a B-list guy, but he doesn't fit the persona of a big, freaky wing, for instance like a Sam Thompson or Chasson Randle or Bradley Beal," Sullivan said. "Not that I think if those guys fall through that Hayden would definitely get a shot at Illinois, that type of thing. But as far as Northwestern or Iowa, those are more system schools, and he'd fit right in with those guys. He can shoot, can score, is a tough, hard-nosed player. It just kind of depends on what the school system is like and what they need and who they get before him.

"He'll play out the recruiting process pretty long just to see what schools jump in on him.

The allure of the Ivy League schools has also piqued Hoerdemann's interest. Sullivan said the BCC standout is near the top of his class academically.

"I know Harvard is really high on his list right now just because of their academics and life after basketball," Sullivan said. "He's definitely a student-athlete first, and that's kind of a nice thing to see every once in a while."

More Peoria Irish recruiting news

  • Peoria Notre Dame post MAX BIELFELDT is receiving heavy interest from Western Michigan. Holy Cross and most of the Missouri Valley continues to stay in touch with Bielfeldt. "They're just kind of waiting to see what happens with him, if he grows or how much moble he can become," Sullivan said. "He's a beast and everybody knows that. But 6-7 is not the tallest if you're not that athletic. They're going to wait and see probably until next year would be my guess to see if he can handle against some bigger guys. If he's still putting up the big numbers, I'm sure the offers will start rolling in."
  • Springfield ‘s MARK GILCHRESE, a 5-foot-8 point guard, is "starting to feel better" after resting an injured knee, Sullivan said. Gilchrese was scheduled to have an MRI to see if there were any serious injuries, but the Springfield standout is sitting out the football season to receive more rest. Bradley, Northern Iowa, Missouri State and Holy Cross are some of the schools recruiting the Springfield star.
