- Future Illini quarterback CHANDLER WHITMER completed 11-of-19 passes for 141 yards and two touchdowns to lead Downers Grove South to a 37-22 win over crosstown rival Downers Grove North on Friday.
- CJ FIEDOROWICZ was limited to three catches for 42 yards as Johnsburg fell to Sterling 28-3 on Friday. The 6-foot-7 Fiedorowicz is ranked the No. 5 tight end in the country by Rivals.com.
- Defensive back DEXTER McDONALD, an Illini commit, and the Kansas City (Mo.) Rockhurst Hawklets lost to Mullen 17-7 on Friday night. McDonald had three interceptions in the season opener for Rockhurst (2-2).
- Illini commit MICHAEL HEITZ and South Fulton picked up their second-straight victory of the season with a 43-8 rout of Rushville-Industry. Heitz, a 6-foot-6, 260-pound offensive tackle, helped clear the way as South Fulton finished with 333 yards of total offense, including 174 yards rushing.
- Illinois commit COREY COOPER, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound safety, and Proviso East fell to Willowbrook 44-26 on Friday night. The Pirates are 0-4 on the season.
- Future Illinois offensive lineman ANDY GALLIK and Brother Rice lost to Providence 23-21 in a Catholic league squabble on Friday. Brother Rice (1-3) had defeated Providence in five of their last six matchups.
- Illini commit SHAWN AFRYL, an offensive lineman, and Niles West fell to Glenbrook North 6-0 in a physical game on Thursday. Niles West is 1-3 on the season. Afryl (6-foot-3, 300 pounds) committed to the Illini in April and will likely play guard in college.
- MARK WILSON, a 6-foot-2, 225-pound linebacker committed to Illinois, and Tallahassee (Fla.) Lincoln defeated Florida High 16-6 on Thursday. Wilson and the Trojans' defense didn't allow Florida High to score (the Seminoles scored on an interception return late in the fourth quarter).
TARGETS - How some of the Illinois recruiting targets played during the first week of the high school season.
- Offensive tackle SEAN HICKEY and Murrysville (Pa.) Franklin Regional defeated Fox Chapel 42-21 on Friday night. Hickey and the Panthers offense amassed 444 yards of total offense. Hickey has plans to commit to one of three schools: Illinois, Boston College or Syracuse.
- Memphis (Tenn.) Christian Brothers fullback JONATHAN BROWN and Memphis (Tenn.) Christian Brothers fell to Whitehaven 21-0. Brown, being recruited by Illinois as a linebacker, has scholarship offers from Illinois, Kentucky, LSU, Memphis, Mississippi and Texas Tech.
- Hialeah (Fla.) defensive lineman COREY LEMONIER was back in action on Friday night after suffering a foot injury, but the highly-recruited 6-foot-4, 220-pound defensive end couldn't help his team to a win as the Thoroughbreds fell to Miami Northwestern 42-20 on Thursday. Lemonier has offers from Florida State, Florida, Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Miami and Illinois, among others. His teammate, CALVIN SMITH, also has an offer from Illinois and several other BCS programs.
- Shiloh Christian (Ark.) linebacker MITCHELL ROBERTS and the Shiloh Christian Saints had their first loss of the season, falling to Greenwood in a 54-51 barnburner on Friday night. The teams combined for 105 points, 15 touchdowns and 1,195 yards of offense. Roberts has offers from Illinois and Tulsa and interest from several Big 12 and SEC programs.
