Weekend Wrap - Week 5

Every Monday during the prep football season, IlliniHQ.com will give a wrap-up of how Illini commits and targets fared during the previous weekend's games. Here are a few highlights from last weekend.

  • Future Illini quarterback CHANDLER WHITMER completed 12 of 24 passes for 163 yards and two touchdowns to lead Downers Grove (Ill.) South (3-2) to a 37-0 rout of Willowbrook on Friday.
  • CJ FIEDOROWICZ caught four passes for 132 yards and two touchdowns as Johnsburg defeated Woodstock North 43-0 to improve to 4-1. The 6-foot-7 Fiedorowicz is ranked the No. 5 tight end in the country by Rivals.com.
  • Defensive back DEXTER McDONALD, an Illini commit, and the Kansas City (Mo.) Rockhurst Hawklets improved to 3-2 with a 20-13 win over Jefferson City on Friday.
  • Illini commit MICHAEL HEITZ, a 6-foot-6, 260-pound offensive tackle, and South Fulton fell to Bushnell-Prairie City/Avon 42-6 on Friday. The Rebels managed just 100 yards of total offense in the loss.
  • Illinois commit COREY COOPER, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound safety, caught the go-ahead touchdown to give Proviso East its first win of the season. Cooper's 18-yard touchdown with five minutes left sealed a 28-24 Pirates win over Addison Trail. Cooper also had a fumble recovery.
  • Future Illinois offensive lineman ANDY GALLIK and Brother Rice rolled past Gordon Tech 42-0 on Friday for a homecoming victory to improve to 2-3 on the season. Read more about Gallik here.
  • Illini commit SHAWN AFRYL, an offensive lineman, and Niles West fell to Maine South 56-21 on Friday. Niles West is 1-4 on the season. Afryl (6-foot-3, 300 pounds) committed to the Illini in April and will likely play guard in college.
  • Cass Tech and Illini commit DANIEL EASTERLY, a 6-foot-4, 200-pound safety, lost to Detroit Southeastern 35-0 on Friday night. Read more about Easterly here.
  • MARK WILSON, a 6-foot-2, 225-pound linebacker committed to Illinois, and Tallahassee (Fla.) Lincoln defeated Rickard 17-6 on Friday.

TARGETS - How some of the Illinois recruiting targets played during the first week of the high school season.

  • Offensive tackle SEAN HICKEY and Murrysville (Pa.) Franklin Regional defeated Plum 33-20 on Friday night. The Panthers are 3-1 after the win. Hickey has plans to commit to one of three schools: Illinois, Boston College or Syracuse.
  • Memphis (Tenn.) Christian Brothers fullback JONATHAN BROWN caught a 14-yard touchdown pass to help lead Memphis (Tenn.) Christian Brothers to a 31-7 win over Millington on Friday. Brown, being recruited by Illinois as a linebacker, has scholarship offers from Illinois, Kentucky, LSU, Memphis, Mississippi and Texas Tech.
  • Illini targets COREY LEMONIER, 6-foot-4, 220-pound defensive end, and CALVIN SMITH, a 6-foot-4, 265-pound defensive tackle, of Hialeah (Fla.) saw their team fall to 2-2 on the season after a 47-26 loss on Friday. Lemonier has offers from Florida State, Florida, Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Miami and Illinois, among others. Smith has offers from Illinois, Arkansas, Florida, Florida State, Miami (Fla.), Ole Miss, Notre Dame, Tennessee and several others.
  • Shiloh Christian (Ark.) linebacker MITCHELL ROBERTS and the Shiloh Christian Saints defeated Berryville 37-0 on Friday night. The Saints, 2008 state champions, routed Berryville 65-0 last year and prompted a vote to remove Arkansas private schools from the public school playoffs. Shiloh pulled its starter after just one quarter on Friday. Roberts has offers from Illinois and Tulsa and interest from several Big 12 and SEC programs. Read more about Roberts here.
