Weekend Wrap - Week 6

Every Monday during the prep football season, IlliniHQ.com will give a wrap-up of how Illini commits and targets fared during the previous weekend's games. Here are a few highlights from last weekend.

THE COMMITS

  • Future Illini quarterback CHANDLER WHITMER threw three touchdown passes to lead Downers Grove South (4-2) to a 42-6 rout of Proviso East (1-5) on Friday. The win ended the playoff hopes of Whitmer's future Illinois teammate COREY COOPER, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound safety, and the Pirates.
  • Johnsburg wide receiver CJ FIEDOROWICZ, an Illini commit, had zero catches in the first half as his team fell behind 32-0 to Woodstock on Friday. But the 6-foot-6 senior had 121 yards and two touchdowns, including an 88-yard score, to help Johnsburg score 29 unanswered points. But Woodstock held on for the 32-29 victory.
  • Defensive back DEXTER McDONALD, an Illini commit, and the Kansas City (Mo.) Rockhurst Hawklets improved to 4-2 with a 27-14vwin over Hickman on Friday.
  • Illini commit MICHAEL HEITZ, a 6-foot-6, 260-pound offensive tackle, and South Fulton defeated Havana 28-22 in overtime on Friday night. Heitz helped lead a Rebels offense that totaled 333 yards. Read more about Heitz here.
  • Future Illinois offensive lineman ANDY GALLIK and Brother Rice lost to Loyola 24-7 on Saturday. Read more about Gallik here.
  • Illini commit SHAWN AFRYL, an offensive lineman, and Niles West fell to New Trier 42-0 on Friday. Niles West is 1-5 on the season. Afryl (6-foot-3, 300 pounds) committed to the Illini in April and will likely play guard in college.
  • MARK WILSON, a 6-foot-2, 225-pound linebacker committed to Illinois, and Tallahassee (Fla.) lost to Pine Forrest 48-17 on Friday. Lincoln (3-2) was ranked the No. 6 team in Class 4A heading into the game.

TARGETS - How some of the Illinois recruiting targets played during the first week of the high school season.

  • Offensive tackle SEAN HICKEY and Murrysville (Pa.) Franklin Regional defeated Knock 27-3 on Friday night. The Panthers (4-1) threw for 206 yards. Hickey has plans to commit to one of three schools: Illinois, Boston College or Syracuse.
  • Shiloh Christian (Ark.) linebacker MITCHELL ROBERTS and the Shiloh Christian Saints defeated Pea Ridge 44-13 on Friday night. Roberts has offers from Illinois and Tulsa and interest from several Big 12 and SEC programs. Read more about Roberts here.
