Big 12 football: Week 2 lookahead

It ain't what it used to be, but the Central-Urbana rivalry -- one of the state's oldest -- will be renewed Friday at Urbana's McKinley Field. The Maroons will be a decided favorite, and unless something strange happens, they'll earn bragging rights in the intercity battle once again. But for Urbana, there is more at stake than just a trophy.

Coach Mike Hoskins is trying to rebuild a program that has experienced more than its share of bumps and bruises in recent years. He's making progress, but it comes in baby steps. The key right now is progress. Urbana's progress isn't likely to be measured on the scoreboard because the teams they're facing are more talented and experienced. In that respect, the Big 12 did Urbana no favors with its scheduling; the Tigers open the season against a murderer's row of Normal Community, Central and Bloomington. Those are three of the league's top teams. Meanwhile, two of Urbana's final three games are against the Decatur schools, which have been lower-division teams in recent seasons. If the schedule was flipped, Urbana would have a better chance of building some confidence and momentum heading into October. As it stands, the Tigers are just trying to tread water -- and avoid injuries -- until they can face a few teams that are more on their level.

The other local Big 12 game should be a dandy. An improved MacArthur team, led by 6-foot-3 quarterback Robert Smith, will test a fresh-faced Centennial defense. I'm not sure the Generals can stop Centennial running back Rayvonte Rice, but I'm also not convinced yet that Centennial can shut down Smith, who, from what I understand, is considered a big-time prospect. College scouts love his athletic ability.

Danville, meanwhile, fresh off its entry into the Class 6A poll at No. 9, figures to have an easy time against a Mattoon team that appears to be in rebuilding mode. Next week, however, comes an interesting test: Centennial vs. Danville. Can't wait for that one.

Back after Friday's games with thoughts on Week 2.
