On second thought ... Giant Oak still in picture

After trainer Chris Block's colt Giant Oak ran a decent fourth in last week's Louisiana Derby, the Champaign-area native said the horse likely was off the Kentucky Derby trail. As it turns out, Block -- or his owners, the Tarra family of suburban Chicago -- have reconsidered.
The Daily Racing Form reports that Giant Oak remains a possible starter in the Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland on April 11. So, stayed tuned.
The Blue Grass would be a reasonable spot for the colt, who has displayed his best form on grass. The Blue Grass is contested on a synthethic surface, and it's common for horses who prefer grass to run well on synthetics. Keeneland's Polytrack surface has historically favored come-from-behind types like Giant Oak, so it would be worth taking a shot in that race, should his owners choose that route.
