Giant Oak, the 3-year-old colt trained by Champaign-area native Chris Block, has been entered in Saturday's Illinois Derby at Hawthorne Race Course.
A field of 11 was entered for the spring's biggest race in Chicago. The Grade 2, $500,000 race is prep race for the May 2 Kentucky Derby.
Giant Oak may yet wind up in the Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland on April 11. If the track on Saturday is wet, Block said he'll scratch the horse and instead run on the synethetic Polytrack surface at Keeneland a week later. Giant Oak's most recent effort was a fourth-place finish in the slop in the Louisiana Derby.
