Giant Oak, the Illinois Derby runner-up who is trained by Philo native Chris Block, could be headed to the Kentucky Derby. A decision on whether he colt will run in America's premier race for 3-year-olds will be made Monday, according today's report in the Louisville Courier-Journal.
A story on Bloodhorse.com recently indicated that Giant Oak appears likely to start in the Derby. It would be the first Derby starter for Block, 42, whose parents Patricia and David Block own a 40-acre farm in Philo. The colt currently is stabled with Chris Block at Hawthorne Race Course in Chicago.
Giant Oak is owned by veteran owner/breeder Virginia Tarra of Orland Park. She also has not had a Derby starter, and the allure of participating in the Derby might prove too hard for Tarra to ignore.
