Here is the 2009 Illinois football schedule per FightingIllini.com:

2009 Schedule
Sept. 5 vs. Missouri (St. Louis)
Sept. 12 Illinois State
Sept. 26 at Ohio State
Oct. 3 Penn State
Oct. 10 Michigan State
Oct. 17 at Indiana
Oct. 24 at Purdue
Oct. 31 Michigan
Nov. 7 at Minnesota
Nov. 14 Northwestern
Nov. 21 Fresno State
Nov. 28 TBA

Now comes some rumors that TBA will be filled by an "at Cincinnati" soon.

WHAT?

Not only is this team going to be handicapped by a ludicrous home-and-home with Fresno State the next couple of years, but there's a possibility of a home-and-home with CINCINNATI?

What can POSSIBLY be gained by this? Not only will the Big Ten season be DONE for Illinois two weeks before the end of the season, but you throw the team into two pools filed with sharks and mines besides.

I am all for tough schedules, but why put the team in with other "hungry" programs that you gain NOTHING by beating, and lose nearly EVERYTHING by losing to?

Can someone else start scheduling the Illinois football seasons, PLEASE?

Comments

You've summarized the incredulous reactions spanning over about 50 Illiniboard threads into one. Very few understand the lunacy that orbits the mind of a football-centric-yet-football-anemic athletic director, but nothing remains on which to comment if Ron G. instantiates this ultimate 2009 opponent. The definition of insanity is repeating the same behavior and expecting a different outcome.

Illinois will start off bad again next yesr. Youre telling me 3 out of the first 4 games next year are against missouri, Ohio State, and Penn State?

1-3 record for sure and no shot again for a bowl or to win the big ten championship.Ron G must be intent on making Zook suicidal.

Gunther must think he earns brownie points with the NCAA by consistently having one of the toughest schedules in the country. We should have Iowa's schedule. You can bet they wouldnt schedule Missouri every stinking year.

Most of the SEC teams schedule NO ONE outside of the conference season, and yet the conference is still called the greatest ever. Florida plays absolutely no one, and yet people already are preparing to make like 2006 and jump them ahead of whatever teams necessary to set up a Big 12-SEC title game.
