Why am I supposed to be optimistic about UI football, again?

I've taken some heat from some of the other people that blog on this site about not being optimistic about Illinois football for the next year. Let me give you several reasons (besides the ridiculous scheduling) why I'm not sold on this team at the moment.
Vontae Davis, Brit Miller, Will Davis, Derek Walker, David Lindquist, Rodney Pittman and Sam Carson.
All on the Illini defense last year, not on the roster this one.
That subtracts 412 of 867 tackles, 50.5 of 84 tackles-for-loss, 20.5 of 32 sacks, and 4 of the already anemic 6 interceptions the team had all last season.
Mind you, I wasn't all that impressed with some of the defensive performances last season, but I don't see any one being able to step into that much 'defensive production' right away.
I'm open to being proven wrong, and I hope I am...but I cannot possibly see how ANYONE can project the Illini defense as being as good as, let alone better than, last year. And Illinois was a losing team last year.

I do not know how good the defense is going to be this year. But this we know they were terrible last year and got worse as the season went on. Ending with the great Northwestern performance. So lets just say that we the fans are unafraid. We expect it to be bad we just do not know how bad. If we are better its all gravy. Wilson could be the biggest bust I can remember. I still can't tell you what Vontae Davis did other than being Vernons brother that made him a number one pick.
