So, you think serving a volleyball over the net is a snap? Then come to Huff Hall on Saturday morning and give it a try.
The fan support group for the Illini volleyball team, the Networkers, will hold its second Family FunFest from 10 a.m. to noon. This free event - targeted toward children and families but open to everyone - is an opportunity to interact with the team in a variety of ways.
That includes a series of volleyball skills stations set up around the gym, where you can try your hand at serving, spiking, passing and other elements of the sport. Illini players will be at each of the stations to offer tips or demonstrations of each skill. (And don't worry; they're very nonjudgmental).
There also will be face painting (in Illini orange and blue colors), player autographs, opportunities to have your picture taken with the players (those photos can be e-mailed to you); and the showing of the Illini's highlight video from the 2007 season.
Craig Pessman, president of the Networkers, said last year's inaugural FunFest attracted about 50 fans.
"The players are really good with the kids, and the kids have a lot of fun with it," Pessman said. "It's really laid back."
Pessman said the event serves a twofold purpose: to promote Illini volleyball, especially among youngsters, and to acquaint folks with the team's fan support group.
"It's an opportunity to get exposure for the Networkers and pick up some members," said Pessman, who indicated there will be a table where fans can learn more about the group and, if they're so inclined, sign up.
