Play shops give kids chance to be creative
URBANA – Amara Yoga & Arts will present a series of Waldorf-inspired art play shops for children starting Saturday.
The "Fairies and Fairy Houses" play shop will be taught by dollmaker and art teacher Rebecca Flores of Urbana. Participants will create fairy houses and fairies to live in them during the six-week session taking place from 10 to 11:15 a.m. Saturday mornings through Dec. 19.
"Having time to be creative and play is an essential part of childhood that is becoming less and less available to kids today," said Flores, a Waldorf-trained art teacher. "These classes will inspire creativity and instill in children a sense of wonder and magic, while working with natural materials."
The Waldorf education system, based on the teachings of Rudolph Steiner, is known for its holistic approach to learning: "education from the inside out."
The fairy houses will be built from natural materials including willow twigs, moss and dried flowers and could be used as Thanksgiving centerpieces, Flores said.
The classes will be in the art room at Amara Yoga & Arts on the east side of Lincoln Square Village. At the same time, Amara will offer parents and other adults a yoga fundamentals class geared toward beginners. Children may elect to stay for the noon yoga for kids class taught by Kathryn Fitzgerald, co-owner of Amara.
