No one injured in fire at vacant house in Champaign
CHAMPAIGN – A fire in a vacant single-story home caused moderate to heavy damage but no injuries Monday afternoon, the fire department said.
A call came in at 1:55 p.m. that there was a fire at 905 N. Walnut St., C. Firefighters encountered heavy smoke upon arrival, but the blaze was limited to one bedroom.
Firefighters had it under control by 2:34 p.m.
The cause of the fire was undetermined, according to a news release. The listed owner is Sooqeong Palomaki.
According to the fire department, the house was an abandoned property with no gas or electrical hookups, and "the interior and exterior of the building were piled high with garbage."
There was no insurance on the property, the release said.
