3 hurt in accident on Interstate 57 west of Champaign
CHAMPAIGN – Three people were injured in a collision west of Champaign on Saturday morning.
According to an Illinois State Police report, Thomas Caneva, 51, of Champaign was driving a silver passenger car on the northbound on-ramp to Interstate 57 coming from Curtis Road at 10:13 a.m. As soon as he got on the highway, he began to pass a northbound semitrailer.
Caneva said he didn't see a red 2006 Chevrolet Aveo driven by Gale Gates, 45, of Chicago coming from behind him. Gates told police that it appeared that the silver car had pulled in front of the red car. In an attempt to avoid a collision, Gates' vehicle swerved to the left, and Gates immediately lost control of the car. Gates' car left the roadway, flipped over the median and landed in a southbound lane, where Patrick Riley, 41, who listed an address in Minneapolis, was driving a black 2007 BMW southbound. Riley swerved to get out of the way of Gates' car.
