CATLIN – Village officials approved a $145,729 tax levy for the upcoming fiscal year on Tuesday.

Mayor Clay Woodard said the new levy is about 4.9 percent higher than the current, $138,803 tax levy. He said the village board usually increases the levy by less than 5 percent each year, and that he did not anticipate a large local tax increase in the near future.

"This is the tax levy we are going to work with for the next budget year," Woodard said.

He said he anticipates that the pickup truck used by the streets and alleys department may need to be replaced in the 2010-2011 fiscal year, and that the village may consider purchasing some equipment to grade village alleys.

In other business, the board voted to give $25 gift certificates for the Catlin IGA to all 18 full-time and part-time village employees as a Thanksgiving present.

Woodard also announced that the village Christmas tree lighting ceremony will be held at 5 p.m. on Nov. 29. In addition to lighting the decorations on the blue spruce tree outside village hall, Santa Claus and his reindeer will be present, and refreshments will be served.
