We need to teach to individual strengths
In three years, my two granddaughters will be starting school. They are so lovely and so smart and so different from each other. I dream they will gain a love of learning that will last a lifetime. I fear they will be taught to dislike schooling and look forward to the day they can begin learning through their strengths and interests.
In kindergarten, decisions will be made to group students by weaknesses in first and second grades to prepare them for the tests that begin in third grade. Under current No Child Left Behind law (NCLB) in 2014, when Peyton and Kayla will be in third grade, 100 percent of the students will be expected to meet certain arbitrary standards.
