What do we expect from police officers?

Friday October 30, 2009

You have to wonder why anyone would want to become a police officer.

It seems to me if they can't find a criminal or solve a crime, they are accused of not doing enough. If they do prevent a crime and force has to be used, they are accused of abuse of power. Just what does the community expect of them?

I think it was terrible to have a young person like Kiwane Carrington lose his life. But we need to look at the entire picture to see that the officers were doing their job to protect and serve. They were called to what they were told was a burglary in progress..

When the young man tried to flee instead of doing as told, police had to take steps to protect themselves as well as the community. I also think the advertisements in the paper calling for the resignation of Chief R.T. Finney are absolutely ludicrous. I, for one, am proud of our officers out there risking their lives so the rest of us can sleep a little better at night and feel safe in our own neighborhood.
