The University of Illinois arboretum, home to acres of gardens and trees on the south end of campus, might one day house a welcome center for 4-H students and visitors and a heritage garden showcasing plants developed at the university.
On the horizon is a 35,000-square-foot, environmentally friendly "gateway center," according to preliminary plans. 4-H expects to launch a fundraising campaign, estimated at $18 million, to pay for the building and fund an endowment to cover maintenance.
