Candidates begin filing for February primary
Republicans will have a three-way race for county board in District 1 in northwest Champaign County in the Feb. 2 primary election.
With candidate filings beginning Monday morning, incumbent Chris Doenitz of rural Mahomet brought his candidacy petitions Monday morning to the Champaign County clerk's office, as did challengers Stephanie Holderfield and Gary Maxwell, both of Mahomet.
Other Republicans filing were incumbents Stan James in District 2 (northeast Champaign County) and Brad Jones and Jonathan Schroeder in District 3 (southwest Champaign County).
Democratic county board candidates filing so far are Eric Thorsland of rural Mahomet in District 1, Alan Kurtz of Champaign in District 7 and Scott M. Bennett and James P. Quisenberry, both of Urbana, in District 9. Quisenberry and Bennett are running for two spots on the county board to replace retiring board members Barbara Wysocki and Steve Beckett.
In Springfield, Democratic incumbent state Sen. Mike Frerichs, D-Champaign, filed to run for a second term, as did incumbent state Rep. Naomi Jakobsson, D-Urbana. Republican Norman Davis of Champaign also filed this morning for the 103rd District seat held by Jakobsson.
Also making their candidacies official were incumbent state Rep. Shane Cultra, R-Onarga, for the 105th House District seat, incumbent state Rep. Chapin Rose, R-Mahomet, in the 110th House District and former Catlin Mayor Chad Hays for the 104th House District seat. Hays is hoping to replace state Rep. Bill Black, R-Danville, in the Legislature.
Former Vermilion County State's Attorney Frank Young of Danville filed to be a Republican candidate for judge in the 5th Judicial Circuit.
