Assembly Hall homecoming set for Deron Williams

CHAMPAIGN – The last time Deron Williams suited up at the Assembly Hall, it was as the point guard for the top-ranked Illini.
The next time it will be as an Olympian and multimillionaire.
With Williams as the central attraction, his Utah Jazz and the Chicago Bulls will play a preseason game at the Assembly Hall at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 17. Jeff Wohlschlaeger, the Bulls director of game operations, said tickets for the exhibition game will go on sale Aug. 23.

Tate: Old-school star staying in the swing of things

CHAMPAIGN – Heavens! Kendall Gill has turned 40. But, ever young, he can still perform a 360-dunk, and sported a mouse under his right eye from a recent sparring match.
No, he doesn't box professionally anymore. But he trains for such a non-event daily, rising before 5 a.m. to run 3 to 5 miles, and flexing his muscles in the gym each afternoon except Sunday.

THX to Bloomington Herald-Times reporter Chris Korman, who answered our questions via text while sifting though phone records and NCAA violations as the Indiana Hoosiers beat writer:

Richmond, Head back on UI campus

CHAMPAIGN – At this rate, perhaps Jereme Richmond and Crandall Head should go 50-50 on an apartment near the Illinois campus.
Illinois' highly regarded 2010 recruits continued their recent habit of tripping to their future school when they arrived on the UI campus for a visit Tuesday.
